What Is an IP Address?

An IP address is a numerical label assigned to devices connected to a network. It allows data to be routed correctly between computers, servers, smartphones, and other internet-connected devices.

There are two main versions of IP addresses:

IPv4 Address

IPv4 uses a 32-bit format and appears as four numbers separated by dots.

Example:

192.168.1.1

IPv6 Address

IPv6 uses a 128-bit format and provides significantly more available addresses.

Example:

2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334

Public IP vs Private IP Address

Public IP Address

A public IP address is assigned by your internet service provider and is visible on the internet. Websites and online services use this address to identify your connection.

Private IP Address

A private IP address is assigned within your local network and is used for communication between devices such as computers, printers, routers, and servers.

Common private IP ranges include:

  • 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255
  • 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255
  • 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255
